Re: Couch to 5k

@scubachickthat is terrible. I run in the forest so don't meet all that many people but am always a bit nervous that some deranged person will jump out from the trees and bash me, a few years ago an American tourist out walking in the forest had that very thing happen to her, a man from a mental home jumped out and clubbed her on the back of the head, she never regained consciousness. That is why I started running, when my walking pal got sciatica and could no longer walk I was a bit too spooked to walk for 2hours on my own so started running. I only run for 30 minutes and I hope I will be passed before anyone can jump at me. I also change my times a bit under orders from My D H. I do however love the quietness, birdsong, red squirrels and the odd deer. It is a scorcher here today but since I have been away for 2 1/2 week and have not had a run I will have to fit one in today. Happy jogging all of you couch 2 5k is a fantastic too I would advise everybody with reasonable health to use it and be amazed. I started it when I was 67 and have only got pleasure and joy from it. sorry I seem to have ranted a bit,

25 minutes again today but had to wait until the rain stopped. I usually run in a local park but not today as it would be too wet.
@Scubachick did you report it to the police as I think that isn't allowed without permission.

I just use the C25K app from Zen Labs. It doesn't tell me anything except when to walk and when to run and then I play my own music!

I like the NHS one. I think the woman is ok and I don't mind the music.

The "photographer" was part of the 10k fun run I did a couple of weeks ago. They were doing the usual shots of people crossing the finish line, but this guy was also taking shots of people in the cool down area. Data protection in Ireland says that anyone can take your image and upload it but an individual has the right to ask for it to be removed. I have done this, but there is all sorts of problems identifying the exact images I want removed as they are not numbered on the site. The image is of me stretching with my had up to try to stop the photo being taken. Its fairly obvious I didnt want it, but they went ahead anyways. I also spoke to the guy immediately and thought he deleted it. The whole thing would make me think twice before I enter another fun run! I might post in the runners thread for info on this.

As an aside, I have also seen the FB site for the local night spot with images of anyone who goes. Many shots seem to be taken without the subjects knowledge. There was also a newspaper article about a woman who found out she was slated on social media when a stranger took her photo while she breastfed and uploaded it. The world is getting scary!

I missed two weeks of running while I moved my mother across the country. [The actual move was one day, but between the packing and the arrangements and settling her into the new "memory care" facility, it was more like two weeks.] Quite an ordeal, but now I'm trying to get back in the swing of it. I've finished week 6 day 2. It looks like my first opportunity for a 5K in my hometown will be end of August, beginning of September. But it's not clear to me that I'll even be ready then. The app seems to think that once I can run for 30 minutes, I'm ready for a race. Well... I am running 15 minute miles, so I think I need to work up to 46 or so minutes of running before I enter a race. Right? Some of you guys (ADFnFuel, maybe) can kindly refrain from pointing out that you WALK faster than that

Unless you are trying to win the race it doesn't matter. I did C25K for about 7 weeks (from just being a walker mainly) and I was able to complete the 5K in 42 minutes, which I was pleased with! You tend to get your best time in an actual 5K too.

I did my first 28 minute run yesterday ( week 8 run 1), I am on the home straight as far as the C25K goes. The I'll be on my own which is a bit scary.

That IS a problem with new walkers these days. Anything under a 20-minute per mile pace causes their tennis balls to smoke and catch on fire!

Just reading back over this thread which I haven't contributed too of a long time and I see we have some great successes to celebrate. Plus some major worries re injuries and photos!
But the best bit is @ADFnFuels wit, you do bring a smile to my face sometimes. Thanks

@Brand-ie once you have finished couch 25k you get to the good bit you can go for a 15min run, a 30min or ever a 45min run or anything in between depending on the time you have available and the weather conditions. If you have an i phone I have a great app called Runkeeper. It maps out where you have run, how long, time per km and altitude covered. I can highly recommend it. :like:

Yay! So sign up for a 5K race already! Don't let that training go to waist. There'll be lots of company! Let the real fun begin...

Well done Brand-ie, that's great, I hope you're pleased !. I have got as far as week 4 with my trusty treadmill, so it's going ok. Holidays soon though, so I expect I'll have to go back a few weeks once I'm home. I also keep speed walking round and round the garden like a nutter, but I can't imagine running there, it's too hilly and too many holes and mole hills etc.

Thanks everyone. It's been really good. I am not sure about sighing up for 5k runs as I would have to travel by car to get to any round here but I am going to keep on with it. I don't have an Iphone but there are a couple of 5k trails in the park where I run so might do those and see how I get on.

As you are using the NHS version @Brand-ieYou could upload the Stepping Stones, Stamina and Speed podcasts - you still get help from Laura on these. Not everyone gets on with them but worth a try if you like the structure of the C25K. Have you checked to see if there are any Parkruns in your area (Google Parkrun). Sorry if this has been covered but haven't 'back read' the posts. Otherwise just enjoy the running - because you can
