Further to my enquiries, I did indeed find it too much to do ADF and an eating window. I decided to just experiment a bit and as hubby is dong 5:2, I've been doing that or 4:3 and some form of eating window for the last two weeks or thereabouts. It seems to be working very well so far
Here you are @Marigolds53 :clover:
How small should the eating window be? I find that most days I don't eat until 5.30-6pm and don't eat after 8.30. Is this too short?
I ate between 5.30 and 8.30pm on Saturday, had dinner today at 5.30pm (fast today) and probably won't eat til dinner tomorrow. Could the long gaps be why I'm getting headaches? :?:
@Karenm it could be that you are fasting for too long, but whether it's the cause of the headaches I don't know. Are you keeping your salt intake up? Fasting flushes salt from your body, especially before you become adapted to fasting, and that can cause headaches. So can stopping caffeine intake. But once you adapt to fasting you shouldn't get headaches.

The longest daily fasting regimen I've come across is the so called warrior diet in which the eating window is 4 hours. If you are enjoying your way of fasting, you could try just extending your eating window by a little to see if it makes a difference. Or have lunch at weekends as a treat maybe.

I know that @ballerina often only eats one meal a day with no problems so I wouldn't worry too much.
Hi @Karenm I'm sorry to hear about your headaches and I cannot help you there but worth trying Carorrees' suggestions. I've never had headaches from IF but I see a lot of people do but then it seems to settle down so perhaps you may settle into it. Caroline is quite correct when she says that I often eat only once a day, probably 3 or 4 times most weeks, so I wouldn't worry about a short window as it makes no difference to me whether 8 hours or just as long as it takes to eat one meal. Hope things improve for you soon,

Edited to add......I have a relative who has only ever eaten one meal a day for all his adult life and did the Great Glen Way to celebrate being 70 years of age and VERY fit. 50 years of only eating once a day has worked well for him.
I have come across an even shorter window. Dr Yoshinori Nagumo advocates a 2 hour window. His book is unavailable in English but is on Kindle in a German translation. I am curious, but have no plans to try it!
I cannot be that rigid I'm afraid. I love the flexibility of doing what comes naturally from day to day.

Me too! I try not to complicate it. I just wait till I'm hungry! Sometimes I break my fast at 1 pm or sometimes at 3 pm or sometimes at 6 pm. I know when I really need food and I eat then. Its fantastic and empowering. Occasionally I eat before I want to. Perhaps once a fortnight when I've made brunch for my family but I think the social/family time at the table is totally worth the compromise. Listen to your body and good luck!@Ballerina is an inspiration to me. She has given me permission to only have 1 meal a day occasionally but I can tell you its a feast!
I seem to have (inadvertently) fallen into a 16:8 way of eating after fast days by just eating when I feel hungry and not when it is breakfast time etc. - because I wake up post fast not feeling very hungry at all. Seems to have kickstarted the weight loss a bit (I may live to regret saying that!)
Part of the reason for me skipping til later in the day is that eating seems to flick a big red hungry switch in my body. I can, usually, manage to leave eating til tea time and then have a snack later. But if I eat breakfast or lunch, I end up eating loads, and most of it junk!
I just need to get myself sorted.
We have absolutely loads going on and I know I comfort eat, so am doing my best to avoid that nasty habit, but may be overcompensating by being too strict! I will see what the scales show on Friday and go from there!
BTW I live having permission to "skip" meals. Over the years I've struggled with breakfast but was told I'd stay fat as I wasn't switching my metabolism on. I much prefer having a decent sized meal in the evening, with an occasional bacon and scrambled egg bap for brekkie if we are away!
We are off for a walk around trellissick woods now, so if nothing else, 5:2 has got me exercising again (plus I'm crawling out of my cave to socialise, albeit virtually!)
Thankyou x

@Karenm I think you will find that the vast majority if us are exactly the same so don't worry about it, you are not unusual. I'm never hungry when I get up and like you, if I have something to eat then the whole day just goes bananas, it also goes whole packets of Jaffa cakes, complete tubs of ice cream, anything that used be edible that now lurks in dark and dusty corners and well, anything really, it is most annoying and all because I had breakfast, phew, no more though!!!

@Julianna I'm glad you are enjoying this way of life, it is so liberating that I cannot for the life of me imagine EVER going back to how I used to be. On the days when I eat more than once, the second sitting is usually just a light snack, water biscuits with some cheese and tomato but NEVER a second proper meal, I just can't eat that much these days.

No way back to my old life for me either @ballerina That person has been removed for ever. :like:
@Karenm Yes I'm the same if i eat at lunch I have to be very careful to lay the hunger monster down for the day or my day is doomed, however I'm finding a
very low/zero carb lunch full of lots of salad leaves very small tomato, at least one stick of celery, well you get the picture a massive plate full of nothing really doesn't wake him up these days or maybe I'm somewhat stronger mentally now than last year.
Having done Mon/Tues back2back in doing 18:6 today with the said lunch then chicken breast with veggies and celeriac & turnip mash for evening meal.
My feed days have evolved into at least 16:8 and I'm happy with that knowing that not eating breakfast is actually far better for me and I won't die from starvation.
I just wanted to say for anyone who feels that they could not have an 'eating window' that everyone of us actually eats within a window naturally unless of course you just eat nonstop 24 hours a day and never stop for sleep. The thing is, it just varies so even if you stop eating before bed time at say 10pm and have breakfast as soon as you get up at, for instance 8am, the you have eaten within a 14 hour window. The big difference with those of us who do it mindfully and consciously is that we shorten our window by varying degrees so if you feel you could not do it, remember, you are doing it anyway so why not try gradually shortening it and get some extra benefits?

Hello All - I am new to this 16:8 way of fasting (was 5:2-ing since January, but found that every time I had a break for a week, finding it almost impossible to get back onto it!). Have been trying 16:8 since beginning of last week and finding it much easier!! Had the day off it on Sunday and scales were not kind on Monday morning - was right back where I started! Should I be doing it 7 days a week? Are your losses good on 16:8 alone, or is it a good idea to add a 500-cal fast on one of the days? Advice please, and thank you!
Hi, if you wish to lose weight then I'd throw a couple of 500 calorie days into your 16/8 week, that should get things moving a little bit, hope it works, good luck
