Anyone here done both Fast-5 and 16:8? Wondered if there were any lessons to be had comparing the two from someone who has tried both?
I thought I would be doing 16:8 to maintain, because if I continued with Fast-5 I would carry on losing. Turns out I can now eat enough in 5 hours to maintain. I am the eating window equivalent of someone who has to 5:2 because they gain weight on 6:1. Still it's better than dieting!
I tendtend to lose weight if my window is as short as 5 hours, and maintain/gain at 8 hours. You can adjust your window to suit your needs. So I'd say experiment with different patterns then try to average that window size over the week. So you could do 19:5 for 4 days and 16:8 for 3 for example.
Hi @rawkaren, I am only early days so not in a position to advise anybody, but I did about 4/5 weeks of 16:8 then slid over the last 2 weeks into 19:5, some days eating window goes down into 1 or 2 hours just naturally, and am feeling really happy on it - except for 2 very dizzy episodes as above, but they not been repeated... I just got weighed today for first time, woke up to first 16:8 7 weeks ago today, and have lost 13 lbs! That is with chocolate, pizza, cake and wine and regular meals out at the moment - I know I will have to get more strict as time goes on, but is working right now for me x I think 16:8 was a great method into the longer window - given I'm too much of a wuss to feel 5:2 was doable, I wouldn't have felt comfy going straight into 19 or 20 hour fasts, and I did shape up in the month of 16:8. I know it's early days tho. Hope that's not too rambling a response! x
You've done sooooo well @elc80 and the results are very noticeable! :like:
I'm v v glad that those two " funny " spells haven't happened again! :like: :clover:
Wow Well done @elc80 you're off to a great start :like:

Wow @elc80. I can only dream about such a result. I train hard in the mornings and need to eat, so my eating window is at the front end of the day. I have been doing 16:8 but yesterday it was 19:5. Finished eating yesterday lunchtime and started again this morning. I woke up feeling dreadful and so tired. Almost like a hangover feeling. I suspect it's a mixture of detox symptoms and delayed jetlag. At least I slept though! Thanks for your response.
Hi @rawkaren, ooh that sounds horrid  - esp with the jetlag thrown in, I imagine yr body was probably feeling very confused about what time it was :?: with the long-haul travel and different, spaced-out mealtimes... That can make you feel really under par.

In terms of the horrible hangover feeling - perhaps you were pretty dehydrated? My DH finds it amusing and baffling in equal measure that I'm never without a mug of something in hand :coffee: , and Uni friends call me The Kettle - but I still had to really 'up' liquids doing eating window (rooibos, green, liquorice, mint), cos I felt constantly parched and (TMI  ) found it hard to have a wee :shame: .

Anyway, I would really struggle with the early window, so really very much admire you for having the resolve to stick to that! That is pretty awesome in my book.

And given you travel a lot, train, etc then yr under a lot of stressors already so as you'll know you need to be kind to yourself :rose:.

This is my second attempt (tho first with forum), having gone all gung ho for 16:8 plus gym back in Jan, then that plus freelance, Uni, and long-term ill health all tipped me over into complete insomnia and hey presto, fasting was out the window (I just can't do it without sleep, feeling like this >) and wound up 2 stones heavier than what had previously been my definitive, absolute 'I Will Never, Ever Get Bigger Than This' weight. Well played, hey?! But, we are people not machines! Long-winded point being, this time round I know I am lucky to have a bit less stress going on otherwise, am getting established with the eating before I bring in the exercise, and have LOADS to lose so everything is conspiring for me right now.

All of that said, I am astonished how close to TDEE I can get in under 5 hours, not eating particularly unhealthily nor being as ragingly hungry as I have been in the past - so, for me, to answer yr original question, after transitioning very usefully via 16:8, 19:5 seems to be pretty much the only way I'll be able to go for weight-loss, as presumably I would go well over TDEE in 8 hours, and hopefully with some 5:2/6:1 at some later stage when I (hopefully) harden up

Also with Fast 5, at least if you occasionally have to lengthen the window, it will still only be about 7 hours, which is pretty good going alongside the hopeful health benefits of the long fasts either side.

How did you sleep last night? Are you feeling any differently today? I cannot recommend liquorice tea enough if you are craving something warm and sweet to pick you up in the afternoon - it has helped my fasting enormously! :clover:
@elc80. Thank you. I have slept like a log for the last two nights. Yesterday I really felt like I was hungover with it, but today is a little better. I still don't feel like I'm firing on all four cylinders yet but I'm going to give it a week and then review. Have some tea in my bag for this afternoon
It's day 5 of 19:5 (or really 5:19) for me and I'm starting to feel good. It's 9 hours since I last ate something and I'm off to bed soon and I have absolutely no hunger pangs. I must be training my system. The detoxy feeling has also passed. Be interesting to see how I feel when I wake up in the morning.
That's great news @rawkaren. How fab :like: I'm glad you're feeling so good and your new regime is working for you. :clover:
I've been 20:4 this week ( except for yesterday and tomorrow when having lunch out) and I'm finding it really suits me. I 5:2 during school terms then I sort of 20:4 it in school holidays. I'm really happy and ready to eat by 5 pm. Not sure what to do when school goes back. I have to 5:2 to keep hubs company but would happily 19:5 it the other days but that would probably be too much fasting. Maybe @carorees could advise? :clover:
Xxx julianna
Hi @Juliana my thoughts are, why not increase calories on your 5:2 days and maybe increase the eating window on two or more days to compensate? Perhaps weekends could be more free and easy?

Glad you're enjoying your new system. The flexibility of IF is just so great isn't it?
Well everybody,i am a reformed character
DD is doing so well with her Eating Windows, she has given me a shining good example and i am clambering back on my horse and off at a steady trot, clippety clop, which may later break into a gallop who knows!
She looks so good it has reminded me how much better i looked last Christmas having lost two stone
What lunacy made me put a stone back on this year?
Anyway have put it behind me (lots of the fat IS behind me,getting dragged round after me) and i now have a new resolve! Thanks to @elc80am all fired up again to 5:2 plus 16:8 ( i know it makes sense! ) on the other days XXX
Your new plan sounding good @Candicemarie And who better to have a a role model your lovely DD @elc80 Its certainly working for her, so if she can-we can yes?
We both need to look very closely at our feed days because yes we've got another challenge to go for hopefully making this one.

My new resolve will be the day after my hols and yes weighing even heavier but will try to do better than the last one. Sue
