Re: 6:1 not working:(

@shrinkingrose - il's great to hear from you and even better that you are doing so well and are nearly at your goal! Size 10 feels good, doesn't it? I think 6:1 with the occasional 5:2 when required seems to be the way to go if you want to keep up the occasional long fast side of things (which I do). I tweeted Mimi Spencer about whether it worked for her and she replied she does 6:1 but sometimes 5:2 as well when necessary, to maintain her BMI of 19,5 - 20.
@MCC - Spreading calories works better for some than fasting I think. I just like the discipline of fasting at least once a week so will continue with that.

I've continued to do 5:2 despite reaching my target over a month ago. Partly to keep my OH company as he's got a bit more to lose. But on the 5 feast days I mostly have whatever I fancy. My target was 9stone 2, but I seem to usually be just below 9 stone. I fast Monday & Thursday, so am making sure I am below 9.2 on a Monday morning, after the weekend, and under 9 on a Friday after 2 fast days. I really feel great on fast days (including swimming 40 lengths, 2 mile walk with dog and 2 hours housework on top of 7 hours work today!!!) so am quite happy to continue.

Hi Tass
Good for you! I think it's important to weigh yourself regularly too in order to keep an eye on things. I definitely don't want to lose anymore and am scared that doing 2 full fast days would mean I would, but it is good that you can eat what you want on your 5 feast days now. They really are feast days in that case! My BMI was back to 19 this morning and I'm happy with that level but don't want to go below that now. Being a little more careful over the last week has worked so I'm back on 6:1 this week. Good luck to your OH on reaching his target!

I got a friend of mine who initially dismissed any kind of dieting for herself to start with the 6:1 basically by saying its just one day a week.. Secretly I knew that if i started by saying she had to calorie restrict 2 days a week it would have been a lot harder and that eventually she might add a day.

and without me saying anything .... after just 3 weeks she is choosing which day of the week is her day 2 as she has now declared she is a 5-2er! - ive never seen her so health conscious for a decade now!

yippee i thought and she said this morning to me that she noticed clothes loser and her ankles less swollen.. So happy for her

NOw how do we all tell the world and evangalise about all of this?>>>?

I know Juliania how you feel, want to tell the world about this diet. I was at boots the other day and the woman in front of me had a weigh in scales and a large tub of protein powder in her basket. Clearly she was starting a new diet, so wanted to tell her about the 5:2 but I had to stop myself :)

Back to 57kgs this morning so am doing something right on maintenance without trying. I only did 6:1 last week and still lost.

Back up to 137 lbs today, having seen 135 a couple of times recently. Did not treat yesterdays fast as anything more than waiting for lunch and not topping up with wine at night. This weight seems to be my happy medium but not setting it as a target just yet... Glad you are finding maintenance OK, even though it does seem confusing sometimes!

Just to say hi Susan, I'm really pleased that 6:1 now seems to be working! I'm still a long way off my target (so far off that I haven't actually set a target, if you see what I mean) but it's very encouraging to see that 6:1 (with occasional 5:2) might work.

6:1 forever seems manageable (quite look forward to Monday fasting), but 5:2 forever and ever I wouldn't feel so happy with.

Please keep posting to let us know how you get on!

@Pete - a couple of 1bs here and there is nothing. I did a double take when I went up to 59kgs a couple of weeks ago but losing those 2 extra kilos was quite easy. I'm pleased you are finding maintaining quite straightforward.
@Swedey - yes, I agree, the thought of 5:2 forever was daunting for me too, so I'm pleased that 6:1 is mostly working now with the occasional 2nd fast thrown in when required. I like fasting on Mondays as it gets the week off to a good start (no alcohol either!) It will be interesting to see what the next few weeks bring in terms of weight loss or gain. But as I really didn't have to starve myself to lose those 2 kgs I won't be too concerned if I have to go back to 5:2 again in the future.

Quite astonished your are 18.84 BMI, Franglaise. I am at BMI 120, hoping to get down to 119 BMI.

My weight yesterday was 113.6 pounds. (I am 5'3") I'd like to be a steady 110 pounds, but it is work getting those last pounds off. The leaner I get, the better I feel and the more energy I have. It is quite amazing.

Interestingly enough, nobody has commented on my weight loss or that I'm too thin. One friend I hadn't seen in a while said I looked great, but he was unable to pinpoint it to anything in particular.

I am of the mindset that thinner is healthier. I see a few people here and there who are too thin (anorexia?) but I see far, far more who are overweight and obese.

No I really think you are being a bit hard on yourself, Rufus.

Hi Rufus
I agree, I'd rather be on the thin side too. The only thing is that once you get to over 45 then you can look a bit gaunt in the face if you get too thin which isn't pretty and can really age you. I think I'm OK. A few people I haven't seen for a couple of months have commented on my weight loss now so I guess 6kgs has made a difference although I was quite slim even before I started the diet. I don't want to go below 125lbs (I'm 5'8") mainly because I'm 47 and look too bony!
Good luck with shifting those last stubborn few pounds

Well, I looked at several BMI calculators and the results are the same. I am only 5'3" and not a big person to begin with.

I suppose some might say I am a bit hard on myself, but that's all relative, isn't it? I enjoy being lean and in really good physical condition. I have certain goals and expectations. I work hard at managing my weight, which is why I've never really become too heavy in my life.

Seriously Rufus I think you have got something wrong in your measurements. Here is a BMI table:
Image
Blue is underweight, green is normal, Yellow is overweight, Red is obese.
