Skin, hair & nails ... Help!
28 Dec 2013, 23:08
Is my hair falling out :?: Hairdresser thinks so. My nails seem to be breaking more easily and my skin is dry  Don't want to be a worry wart and know I take good care of my hair and could always lather some more stuff on my skin or keep my hands out of water. Is anyone else in the same boat and your suggestions pleeeeeeaaaaaasssssseeeeee   :?:
Just noticed my nails are very ridged. Buffed them and they are OK. Hair and skin Ok, but need to apply lip balm more frequently now.
Up your good fats, nuts, avocados, coconut oil, olive oil on salads, butter on veg...

My skin has never been better. You do need some fats in your diet as it forms your connective tissues. The fat helps vitamin absorption too.
Sorry, but my nails have been massively better for the past 6 months. They used to break so easily as soon as they got nice and long. Now they're really strong. Never had probs with hair, it's as thick as anything. Up your fat intake to improve your connective tissue formation maybe.

Edit.
Ohh sorry just repeated above advice.
I'm the opposite, skin and hair is great. But, people on here have commented that they do notice a decrease in their skin, hair and nails when winter sets in. Its usually a temporary blip.

I love coconut oil on my skin, lightly rubbed into my hair and eaten and have noticed an improvement in them all since starting to use coconut oil, or it could be 5:2 that's doing it.

I don't mention my nails because I am a chronic nail biter and they never get long enough for me to notice the condition.
Thanks for prompt replies. I thought I have been having more fats have coconut butter oil in my bullet coffee on every fast day. Make own butter from cream and in it goes with mushrooms but not on veggies. Also at least I meal a week is Thai curry with coconut cream. Always use olive oil in home made dressing. What volume are you talking about. Might be my years of being hard wired to low fat that makes me still skimp. Also am due to see GP for bloods so will be interesting as cholesterol has always been good so wonder if I subliminally hang back
The good fats sound like a good idea. Do you have much of these in your diet gillymary?
@Julieathome, I too have been a chronic nail biter all my life only managing to grow them for my wedding 23 years ago. Anyway you won't believe it now I have long, strong white nails. I decided about 2 months ago- that's enough! In the past if my nails were soft from washing up , the oral fixation would have them looking for weakness or a fault so it never was a success.I was going to put this random happening on chatterbox but it seems to fit in here. I wonder if 5:2 has anything to do with me not biting anymore as that habit is totally gone! Probably not. Maybe just the power of positive decisions. Anyway my tips for nail gillymary are
- use gloves when washing dishes
- I use Aveeno intense relief hand cream ( supposed to last 24 hours cost $10 from chemist)
-I apply Sally Hansen hard as nails and every 2nd or 3rd night remove it to let oxygen get to nails (then they get whiter in my case ) then reapply in the morning.
Hope that helps,
Xxx julianna
 Hi @gillymary Yes I'm who one who reported my hair loss/Thinning at about the4 months in stage, quite worrying because it was there every time I washed my hair.
I've just mentioned on another thread that these last 2/3 wks finally it has slowed down not stopped.
My face/neck/arms skin is if anything slightly better.
But was using coconut oil on my legs and they seem drier.
Nails horrible but always have been Lol.
Have started to up my fats because so many members are doing but truthfully I'm ignorant as to why, but always get good advice from members so I follow like a lemming.
I discovered when looking this up for another forum member that lack of biotin can be a cause of hair loss and that biotin deficiency can occur with weight loss, so I suggest trying a biotin supplement. Biotin is one of the B vitamins.
I used to be such a wholesome toast for breakfast person, wraps for lunch so I am not having much bread at all now, only when out or the other day when I was very fatigued just pre Christmas. Funny thing I just started a high potency B yesterday thinking might be missing B vitamins with not having my fortified seedy grainy bread. I will polish off that bottle and see how things improve. Meanwhile will google foods high in biotin. Like to find things in food first. Thanks again for all the good info
Just had a google and would seem adult dose is 30mcg daily and is easily excreted if too much taken on board so my multi-B pill would be too low. Biotin is found in grains and brewers yeast (ah ha with my cutting down bread) also found in cows milk (don't have) and liver ...bleurk no way.

Other sources are the whole egg cooked, sardines, nuts, peanuts, soybeans, black eyed peas, cauliflower, bananas, mushrooms. Many of these items are more my winter fare but will adapt the diet and will take biotin supplement.

Appreciate the discussion as I do have some of the other symptoms which I have pointed out to GP and a different tangent was taken.

Brings me to the point you run out of time to eat when fasting so I am careful to try to replenish on non fast days. It is a cautionary tale to have appropriate supplementation or robust diet if one is to knock out one whole food group in my case it will be wheat in 2014.
Just wondering if hydration levels may also have an effect?
I noticed a big deference in my skin when I was in Budapest and not drinking nearly enough as it was cold and toilet stops not so easy. Face, neck, cuticles and joint skin all went really creepy looking and dry.
Just a thought ...
Up your fats. Eat nuts (especially almonds). Keep drinking the green stuff. Supplement sounds good too.
Since I began to eat almonds and hazelnuts everyday, my skin is much better and my furry babies have something to play with

For my hair, as I always lose a lot in autumn and spring, even more now since I have very long hair, I put some grapefruit seed extract in my shampoo, never had any problems with my nails.

I also take some brewer's yeast for a month every seasons as it's good for the hair, skin and nails' health

And drink 2 to 3l water a day

Is Marmite/Vegemite high in biotin? It's made from brewers yeast...
