I think it must depend on your eyes. My varifocals are great and I wouldn't be without them, but my OH isn't so keen.

Ooppss by accident I assume
Never mind I'm sure your mum will find a good home for it @Silverdarling at least some conciliation.
I see my avatar has gone missing on the iPad-maybe it only appears on the desk top-but I've put that to bed for the night so I can't check! Not that it really matters in the great scheme of things.
Spooky @Merlin Coz I can see it
I can see your avatar @Merlin but I cant see yours @SueQ.
It will all be sorted in the end. The stupid thing is that I don't use my glasses even when reading a book, so I can get away with without reading glasses for bookwork but I do need something for PC work. I do sometimes wonder if I should have gone for the laser eye treatment that hubby wanted to treat me for. At the time though I would have just been swapping distance glasses for reading glasses.

@sue.q it will stay in said freezer until I go back down there on 16th June - or else so in the meantime, will be practising deferred gratification - first fast day in nearly 2 weeks tomoz
@Julieathome, I solved this problem by having a correction for arm's length put on the upper part of my half-glasses that I use for reading. The advantage of the half- frames is that I can push them up and down my nose to suit the occasion (top shelves for instance). For driving and movies, theater, etc., I have separate distance glasses with a reading correction at the bottom of the lenses.
The arm's length is perfect for computer screens and spine labels on library book shelves.
My half-glasses look something like this: only more of a half-moon, feminine shape:
http://www.readingglasses.com/porsche-8 ... Matte+Gold
Actually the shape is a little more like this, except in gold:
http://www.readingglasses.com/goo-goo-e ... olor=Ivory
The opticians always grumble to themselves a little about having to fit two corrections on such a small lens, but the customer's always right. Right?
Hope this gives you some ideas.

I find I keep tipping my varifocals up to read through the lower section better as these specs tend to slide down my nose. I also have reading glasses, a pair in every room, which get a lot of use, but then it's a faff to change to the varies to see the tv etc. My varies also react to light and it fascinates the grand kids watching my eyes disappear behind my darkening specs!
@Manderleythats an awesome drawing and you should be very proud.
Super drawing Manderley, clever chap.
Planned picnic has turned into lunch on the roof garden...not up to " out and about " today
Still whats not to like about lunch al fresco, with everything to hand, not having to look for loos, wait in traffic jams etc etc only one thing missing..if a Mr Whippy van (yipppee its Mr Whippy! ) could somehow make its way up here, that would be the icing on the cake...if we had any cake, that is! actually tell a lie,we have little meringuey things mmmmm...xx
