Back on the 5:2 wagon
27 Aug 2013, 23:41
Back on the 5:2 wagon today after a couple of weeks break & it's been fine - not been that hungry - very pleased. I had planned not to 5:2 whilst on holiday but 2 days before I went away I was diagnosed with breast cancer so I didn't feel like doing my last fast before the hols. Was active on holiday so hopefully that will compensate for extra food & hoping for a metabolism boost too. Had one enforced fast day last week when had to fast before my operation & only had nearly 1 slice of toast (which made me feel sick) in 36 hours. Think my stats might be up the creek though as hospital measurement had me at over 3 inches shorter on my height  I wasn't ready so wasn't standing up straight I think  So today I resumed and it's been fine.

Good heavens woman, you slipped your devastating news in there as though it was an everyday occurrence! I do hope you are fine after your trauma and if you are having any follow up treatments they are no too onerous for you. Please do keep posting about how you are doing, not just about your weight, and I can only send you some big hugs    and my best wishes,

Ballerina x

I was going to say .... fasting isn't your priority right now, but then I thought maybe it will help you to have another focus & something you can take control of ..... ?

Pleased to hear they're reacting SO quickly, that must be a relief.

Given the number of women active on this forum, I'm sure there are plenty who have experienced the same thing (carmelk46 for one!), don't forget that we're not just about 5:2 here, we're about mutual support in a just about everything

Good luck claireglen - take it easy, agree with what's been said above ... I have 2 colleagues who've been thru this over the last couple of years, and they both did well and are continuing to do well. All good wishes and vibes flying your way, and as Ballerina says, keep coming on here for support as and when you need it :clover:  :clover: :victory:

Echo the above, what an awful time. Losing weight definitely shouldn't be your priority, but I guess resuming normal life and being healthy are, so I thinkI am having a gut reaction to the cancer word instead of looking at the bigger picture. Lots of best wishes on your journey and please do keep us updated. :clover:

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. The good news is that fasting and low carb is a really excellent way to boost cancer treatment. Cancer cells can't live on ketones (which you use for energy when fasting/low carbing), so it makes the cancer treatment more effective. It also helps reduce side-effects of treatment. So, don't worry about weight but do keep on the 5:2 wagon. Wishing you a smooth ride through the process and sending some virtual hugs. :hugleft: :hugright:

OH goodness I'm so sorry to hear this news. Much love to you at this time. For what it's worth I've been treated for cancer recently and the long term health benefits (preventative for some cancers included) are what drew me to 5:2. Be sure to reach out here for further support.

Sorry to hear your news. Have you read Dr M's book? It was a story in the book of a woman who had cancer and fasted which helped her through the treatment that drew me to 5:2 in the first place, weight loss is a secondary benefit.

Thank you all for your kind support. I have the book @Wildmissus I'll reread that bit, forgot about it. I'm feeling fine at the mo, but I will be having some follow up treatment, but still awaiting pathology results. I did see that there were a lot of people on here who have had it so that is encouraging in itself - there's an awful lot of it about, so keep checking yourselves! The fact that the consultant said I'd had this for a year to 18 months (only 6 months after a mammogram) & that the tumour was small made me think that being on 5:2 & the repair aspect of it had helped keep the tumour small & slow growing. It was the first thing I asked after being diagnosed, can I keep on with it & was told yes. Eat healthily for wound healing. And as @carorees says it is beneficial. I've never been one to really calorie restrict I nearly always have my 500 + a bit on a fast day on the premise that I probably eat more than 2000 on a normal day, just quartering it  was so ready for a fast day after my hols too
