Hi @Lizzieh, I think you need to get new scales! You certainly do not look overweight, you appear very trim, so I understand the comment from your OH(!). But you'll know what body size is right for you, so best wishes for achieving this. :)

Hi @sassy1 and thanks - it's not my scales, sadly - I recently did one of those free 'health checks' at the Leisure Centre and was told yet again that I'm overweight :frown: I've never had much time for BMIs to be honest. And in reality I just want to get under 11 stone / 70kg, that would probably satisfy me, the 'goal weight' of 10 st 4 is probably unrealistic, plus I think my neck would get too scrawny!

Hi @madcatlady - that's odd! It was there, then it wasn't .... I just reposted it anyway... perhaps it's on a time delay to 'self-destruct after 10 mins' or something....

@Lizzieh, you look healthy, slim and definitely not overweight. :victory: :star: :victory: :star: :victory: :victory: :star: :victory: Didn't someone once moved the healthy bmi from 27 to 25 one day and that's why their was an ' explosion' of people being overweight and obese? @carorees, have you heard this? That is for posting the piccies Liz. Do you mind me asking how tall you are?

Thanks peeps! I appreciate your encoragement... @Julianna, I'm 5' 6" ... and that's very interesting about the shifting of the 'healthy weight' BMI number, how bizarre! I can imagine it shifting the other way, maybe to accommodate the fact that it's no longer 1955 when most people were just smaller all round

BMI used to be age and gender specific so used different formulae that relied upon the nuance of reference and standard weights: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/72/5/1074.long

It was standardised to international reference standards some time ago and, yes, some of the BMI cut-off points for categories were moved downwards: eg. >30 used to be overweight but BMI of or >30 is now obese rather than overweight, and a BMI of or >25 is now overweight where previously it was 'acceptable weight'.

However, there are many reasons why BMI is a useful tool for population level health but provides little useful guidance for individuals (I've had the salutary experience of being <23 BMI while being morbidly obese by body fat level at 42%). I've mentioned these people before but there's a good overview of BMI variation:
BMI is possibly more misleading for women than for men, Braverman and Shah say, since women lose muscle and bone, and replace it with fat, faster than men. BMI measurements don’t take into account precisely how weight is distributed in the body, and, as Braverman explained to HealthDay, “it’s the percent of body fat, not BMI, that makes you obese.”

Based on BMI, about one-third of Americans are considered obese, but when other methods of measuring obesity are used, that number may be closer to 60%, according to Braverman.

Physicians have complained for years that BMI is an imperfect measure of healthy weight. Extremely muscular people, for example, may weigh “too much” for their height, since dense muscle mass weighs more than fat, thus qualifying as obese even if their bodies contain very little fat. Yet it’s not extra weight itself, but excess fat, that leads to health problems ranging from hypertension and heart disease to diabetes and stroke.

Study on which it's based - Table 4 is a particular eye-opener: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Ad ... ne.0033308
