Re: 2014 Low Carbers Tent

@lovemyparrot, @julianna. In my own experience, it's the high fat foods that seem to do the trick rather than just low carb alone. Foods I find particularly filling are avocados and eggs. Right now I'm eating grass fed pastured duck eggs - they taste amazing. Macadamia nuts for crunch and high fat. Any fatty meat from large ruminant animals - grass fed and not given hormones or antibiotics. So wrap your chicken breast in bacon if you can't face steak, bison, pork, venison etc! Oils and fats are grass fed butter (Kerrygold) and MCT or coconut oil. Oily wild fish like sardines are great.
Let me give you an example. Half an avo is 80 cals and 15 fat grams and 9g carbs. A medium sirloin grass fed steak is 150 cals zero carbs but only 5 fat grams - according to MFP anyway. So eat the whole avo and you will probably find it as satisfying as a steak if you are in ketosis. Better still eat both. The difference from Atkins is that he advocated high fat, low carbs and high protein, whereas a keto diet tends to be high fat, low carb and moderate protein. I'm eating less than 0.8g per kg of body weight in protein per day and don't eat any protein at all two days a week..
@debs I think is into her double (heavy) cream and I recall so was @carorees when she was in losing mode. Today I have had 28g of carbs yet 1500 calories. The carbs are coming from my veggies. This is higher than my TDEE, so it will be interesting to see what happens at the end of this experiment.

Thanks @rawkaren, that helps a lot. I thought that you couldn't have much/any protein on the fat fast days but I see that you can.

ooh, quick question Karen. Can you eat cheese ( besides cream cheese) on a fat fast?

@julianna, I think the restricted version of the Atkins fat fast is 1000kcals with 90% of those from fat. The less restricted version is 1200kcals and still 90%+ from fat.

I don't know about other versions - @rawkaren looks to be following a low carb, modest protein, high fat WOE?

Yes I think that is what @debs is doing. The only dairy I'm doing is butter (which is nearly cheese) so can't say how it works. I guess we all find our on ways.

@julianna and @lovemyparrot - I have been having combos of 2oz cream cheese or pate and 1oz macadamias - I like the contrasting textures or I like 2 hardboiled eggs with 2tsp mayo and I drink coffee with cream in between. I find it really easy and quite liberating - hope you get on ok if you choose to give it a go!

There is a very useful table in this link on Chris Kresser's website about how to figure out your optimal carb intake. Sorry I don't know how to display the table direct on the page http://chriskresser.com/the-3-step-proc ... ate-intake.

And also why low carb or keto diets are not for everyone http://chriskresser.com/7-things-everyo ... carb-diets

Hi, thanks @Madcatlady, I just wanted some tips on how to keep it simple and halfway palatable at the same time. I think I will definitely give it a go, and let you know how I get on. Did you lose any extra weight? I'm just hoping for a little boost !!!!

Hi ladies, sorry I haven't been here, I have had trouble getting on here recently, and the mobile site doesn't show up the messages. I have done a couple of fat fasts now and found it really easy. I have been limited as to what I have as I can't get access to much, but the double cream works well with sugar free jelly and in coffee. I shall try and expand things a bit next time, and bring eggs back with me so I can have scrambled eggs and butter. The macadamias I find essential for crunch. I have managed around 80-90% fat a day. I have done three days followed by a fast day and that seems to kick things along, especially as I always end up putting some weight back on when I a, home on break which is very frustrating.

Led here to read about fat fasts by @rawkaren
Never heard about fat fasts before but DD and i have noticed how when we 're able to listen to our bodies..i.e., when fasting...its avocado, eggs scrambled in butter, and chicken we want, specially the crispy chicken skin ( for me )
Thanks karen, fascinating stuff, and many thanks for the tip about H sea salt to help adrenals.
Several yrs ago my GP told me,your adrenals are exhausted, but has never been able to offer any solutions except " rest" . Cant wait to give this a go x x

OMG somewhere in the freezer I have free range pork belly - now would be ideal fat fasting food? I could cook it up (with crackling!!!!!!) Cut into cubes and separate into 200 calorie amounts. What do you think everyone? ( I wouldn't have just that- probably eggs with mayo and macadamias too.
