Re: Bake Off!

I'm a little late to the party but may I join? Unbelievably I had never watched it before, but I decided I wanted to with this series. I was trying all day yesterday and today to download the first and second eps on my Iplayer and finally succeeded with the first. I watched it this afternoon while I sewed labels onto my daughter's uniform after she and I had made a batch of chocolate chip cookies (am I domestic goddess or what? My mom would be cackling if she could see me now!). Loved it! I've always liked Sue Perkins - her series with Giles Coren while they pretend to be an old married couple eating their way through the ages are comedy genius. It is so much nicer than Masterchef - baking doesn't get any tougher than this but they don't feel the need to remind you of it every 5 minutes.

I am only just downloading the Bread episode now so I will wait to watch that before joining y'all - I expect by this time next week I will be right up to speed. Can't wait!

Fasting and about to have my first meal of the day - vegetable stew made from the remains of my veg box - but all I want now is trifle with petit fours for dessert!

Mmmm...desserts! Gosh, I wanted to taste them all! I'm thinking I might have a go at floating islands sometime as I have lots of eggs to use...can't keep up with the chickens' manufacturing rate!

I just watched Bread and am downloading Desserts, so I will get caught up tomorrow. I think there are few hurts that could not be made better with a Mel and Sue Sandwich. Very sweet.

Watch the programme? Hell I'm way further down the road than that. Like they say: I've done that, got the t-shirt etc . . . and I've got the books (3 Mary Berry books from Amazon this week!!!) Consequently I have been up to my ears in gingerbread men all afternoon. Well to be honest . . . gingerbread hearts and rounds as I was a bit heavy handed with the golden syrup and couldn't form my men (if you know what I mean). They didn't have enough "body" to hold their shape. (Personally I blame the cutter as I was doing pretty well up until that point.) Unfortunately, due to an urgent need to sample the goods, I might not echo my men's "lack of body" when I next hit the scales and might have to rethink my newly found baking craze and look for my knitting needles, tapestry silks or similar.

I'm a fan, even though I'm a chutney maker myself  Would love to have the deftness of hand to make those petits fours.
I supply a chef who uses my chutney in his focaccia. Now that's what I call baking....

I saw the bread episode while I was staying with friends in Bath. I don't think I could watch that on a fast day.

I think the show is getting to me. This morning I baked some biscotti that were less than delicious.

I had a vision of Paul and Mary biting into them and shaking their heads.

Paul says, "The lemon..it's not coming through. It's not sweet enoof."

Mary gazes upon me with compassion, "Zills we're very sad about this. Very sad"

and then they turn and walk away, as I dissolve into despair.

I think this will keep me from baking...and that's good.

Ahh Zills, Mary is full of compassion, I'm sure your biscotti were lovely. Not made them in ages.

Sterling episode last night - I've got a feeling Kimberley and the young student girl will be in the final this year.

PennyForthem - chutney in focaccia dough?! What would Paul make of that?

I have to say though I have his '100 great breads book' and I think I must be following it wrong cos none of the breads I've made so far have worked at all. the Halloumi & mint one was an utter distaster - the proprtions of fillings were just so over the top. I'm finding it hard to trust him now.

Great pastry episode tonight! The custard tarts were very amusing ano perhaps surprisingly difficult. I still fancy making some though! Not that I've ever tried them before...has anyone here?
