I've always been of the opinion that if you burn fat, you get water but I've no idea where I've picked that up. I know I am losing weight if I live in the bathroom! :-)
I seem to be fine on the fast day itself but then feel off colour the day after. Today is a particularly bad one with incipient migraine and dizziness. Am having an early (and unwanted) hot chocolate and tracker bar to try to help boost blood sugar levels as I am pretty sure that is the cause (cycling to work this morning make things a lot worse).

It's the glycogen that releases most water, fat less so.
@DrLCH: Well it could be that by morning your glycogen levels are low and your body is refusing to switch to fat burning (a phenomenon known as metabolic inflexibility). Eating carbs will help with the symptoms in the short term, but getting your body to switch smoothly into fat burning is really what you need to do because it is this that brings the health benefits as well as giving better weight loss. Or as I mentioned on the other thread, dehydration, or both!
But how do I overcome this constipation that has come on in the second month of fasting? Sorry for the detail, but I'm used to 'going' every day but now it's 3 or 4 days, doesn't feel good. Should I abandon fasting until my body has caught up again?
Caroline - I don't know what the exact answers are but in the immediate term I need to be able to work effectively so yes, I did need to address the symptoms in the short term. I don't have a working environment where I can manage feeling that ill. Having spoken to a nutritional scientist from my department and done some reading online it seems like it was a mild hypoglycaemic episode. I wrote more about it in the other thread.

Azureblue - I have no idea what to recommend for constipation. Sorry. I think I read somewhere on here about adding healthy oils to your diet but I could be mis-remembering.
Pears, pineapple, fibrous veggies, drink lots of water, coffee. I've had it once so far and think it was when I hadn't managed to drink enough on my fast.
That seems to be the trick. I will take cod liver oil capsules daily and keep up the high water level and an apple a day as well as red grapes, mandarins and plums. For veg I eat broccoli, carrots, parsnips, runner beans, French beans, cauliflower, red onions, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, anything going cheap as well! I also need to walk a good distance at a good speed daily, not always do-able with grand kids in tow. This sounds like a manifesto ... Thanks for all your advice, peeps x
My 5th fast went well yesterday & my difficulty in sleeping on fast nights has gone now. But today for the first time I feel cold and tired & rather lethargic. It is a grey day so SAD may be kicking in? I have had shredded wheat with Oatley for breakfast & will be having homemade spicy sweet potato & bean soup for lunch.
Isis ;)
Pears and pineapples are particularly 'loosening'

OH and I once ate a whole over-ripe pineapple rather than let it go off. This was shortly before undertaking a long car journey. About 2 hours later we were both (simultaneously) in an emergency situation at the side of the road, looking for plants with big leaves if you get my drift...
HI, I've only done one day fast so far (tomorrow will be the next), but I was freezing cold all day - even wore my coat inside, and I was constipated too. Ill be looking a bit closer at what I eat on my FD to try to help.
I did the opposite of over-compensating though and felt so pious about fasting that I didnt want to eat much on the following days - this may change when this becomes a lifestyle rather than a fun new idea! Already lost 4lbs so feeling quite inspired!
Looking forward to fasting tomorrow.........
Hi this is my first week so it might get better I dunno. Basically my face has broke out in loads of spots. I was on slimming world before this n having a can of diet coke every day. N since my 1st fast on Sunday I haven't craved any diet coke which is a good thing!! But why have I broke out in loads of spots? :(
A cautionary tale:- I have been doing 5:2/4:3 no problem since the beginning of January. About 19 hours into fast number 17 last Friday I suddenly got a really uncomfortable pain in my stomach. Now I realise it was a sudden release of stomach acid probably due to me thinking about food. I probably should have eaten something or had a slurp of milk but I didn't. Never one to suffer indigestion there was no antacids of any kind in the house. Two days later and my stomach is still uncomfortable although it is improving. Stomach acid is very strong and you really don't want it gnawing away at an empty stomach. IF is a massive change in way of life for most of us and the last thing we want is for it to damage us in any way. I'm going ahead with fast number 18 tomorrow but from now on I'll have some antacid on hand to take at the first sign of trouble. I'm going to post this everywhere so apologies if you get fed up seeing it
why is such a depressing thread pinned to the top of the board?

I know! Shame. But it's just to provide balance with the positive effects thread.
