Haha I wish my avatar was a clue! Nah I work for the restaurant chain "Subway" as a consultant. Loads of traveling as I look after 30 stores in a 250km range. My role is in that of compliance of the stores but also assisting the Franchisees with their business in any way possible.

Just came across a site "LA Fitness" they are here in NZ but also other countries from what I understand. They do a 10kg challenge where you can hire any machine from a certain range for 6 months. If in the 6 months you loose 10kg then they give you the machine.

I may get a Treadmill in the next week or two on this and take up their challenge. It would help me with getting my steps up, but also I know with 5.2 alone I should be able to hit that challenge!

This might help with further motivation but also will get me a treadmill for about 1/2 price!
I am adding HIIT to my training this week. Any advice on using the Fitbit (I have a Flex) to track steps during? I don't want to use the treadmill or run in place or deep knee bends because I don't think that's sustainable for my joints, but I also know the Fitbit gives me no credit if I use a stationary bike.

I'm thinking of maybe jumping jacks, or moving my Flex to my ankle during the exercise, or maybe not worrying too much about the automatic tracking from the device itself and simply entering the HIIT routine manually into the exercise log. Anyone else playing with this?
I haven't had experience personally but I am pretty sure I have read of people putting it on the ankle to record bike movements with some success.

I would suggest just trying it and seeing how you get on. Or if that doesn't work - like you said, you can always enter it in manually :-)
Well I shoveled 12 inches of blowing snow today for 6 straight hours and only received 11,000 steps! My shoulders and back are saying it felt like I walked using my arms, ha! Maybe will tighten up those bat wings. The way the wind is blowing means I will be out ther moving that same snow again tomorrow ... And it's a Fast day, yikes.
I'm here! Already fed my fitbit for two days, and am excited that I seem to be able to take 10,000 steps just going about my day. Running around the house, going to a couple of stores (yesterday). Is this possible?

It also said I walked more than 4 miles today. Is this possible? I did walk about 2 miles roundtrip to the coffee shop. Do I need to set my stride length? The fitbit estimation of stride length should be fairly accurate if it's based on my height. So I'm a bit confused. But really looking forward to using it more and learning more features!
I once manually entered a bike ride, but mostly I don't bother, and just don't get the "credits" for that exercise. I dont' track calories or anything though, so it doesn't bother me. When I ride my bike, it picks up very light amount of steps, when I skate, it's better, like a bit under moderate walking pace (unless I"m doing drills which involve my toe stops, that picks up heaps more steps). HIT I generally do things like squats and jumping jacks, and it picks those up nicely. But like I say, anything I do that it doesn't count, I just think of as a bonus.
And yeh TBrewton, wouldn't it be great to have a job that involved diving!
Forgot to take my charger to the UK with me so will have dropped right down the boards. Charging at the moment so will have to work hard to get back up there.
I can easily get 5k steps in just visiting the larger mall we have - walking from one end to the other and back is 1 mile. So yes, shopping can definitely rack up the steps. Depending on your height, a mile is somewhere between 2000 and 2500 steps. I think pace has something to do with it - walking more slowly is a shorter stride length, I believe. But yes, on big shopping days, I don't need to step on the treadmill at all.
The calculated stride is pretty accurate unless you are unusually long or short legged for your height.

Wow Wendy, I'm jealous your normal day produces 10,000 steps. If I don't make extra effort, my normal day is typically under 3,000:(

Pace determines your "active" minutes. Only when you walk/run at a speed to get the green bars will it count as active. Of course steps are steps, so I'll take them at any speed.
haha you are lucky GoLinda... a typical day for with no effort is under 1000 ... Ouch!
A typical day for hubby, without specifically getting up to go exercise, is about 2K. For me, it's about 6K. But then he runs for exercise and I only walk - so he gets a lot more steps in than I do!

Well, actually, I'm averaging more like 8000 steps. And since months start on the 1st, and weeks start on Sunday, I'm looking (comparatively) pretty bad - having started on Saturday the 4th.

Question: I'd like to keep track of my [intentional] walks (and maybe runs, but that's hopeful daydreaming so far, as I've never been a runner). But when I put my ~2 mile walk into activities, it added the steps to my total. Of course the steps were already in the total, so I had to delete the activity. So are "activities" only for things that the Fitbit doesn't register?

I then made a journal entry for my walk to the coffee shop. Is this the only way to keep track of it?

Thanks, all!
Hi Fitbitters, I just got my weekly report and all the arrows were green which is a positive, although my daily average was below 10k steps (quite a number of long car journey last week)
@wendyjaneI only add activities that Fitbit doesn't register properly, like cycling or using the Cross Trainer. I used to track running (it would do for walking too) on my phone using the Runtastic app and that used to sync automatically to my dashboard and not double count (there are other apps that are also compatible) but my phone isn't smart enough to run that app and play music reliably, so I got a GPS watch for running and while that can be synced often double counts so I don't bother. So if you wanted a method of logging "intentional" walks/runs you could try the phone app route.
My weekly report is improving slowly, very slowly. Best was 5k steps average about 3.5. I was going to have a long walk yesterday but it rained all day, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. So fingers crossed I'm on it today. I believe that I may be getting a flex or a force for my birthday!

Edit. I'm actually going to wait for a force. Not on sale in the UK apparently.
