Thanks, Franglaise. I did finish, but I'm really hating the half-marathon right now. I'm not signed up for another half-marathon until Feb, and that's one I'm willing to skip if I'm not well by then. I have a 10k in about three weeks, but I'll skip that if I'm not better. The trouble is the sign up is so far in advance of the races here. Skipping feels like a failure in a way, though, of course, if I'm injured, I should do what's best for my health… I'll look into those books.

Oi! Where are you all?
Still here reading but not posting much. I can sympathize with Maryann's last race. It's disappointing to miss a much anticipated goal - especially with long lead time races requiring travel and expense - but it happens.
In my fourth and last half this year I'd realized by mile 7 (11 km) that it wasn't going well; then tripped and fell onto splintery bridge timbers at mile 8 (13 km). This was the first time that I'd actually fallen at a race.
Rather than stop and stand around hurting or worse, walk to the finish, I decided to keep running while applying pressure with my left hand to my bleeding right palm. Since my right knee was also bleeding, I had to laugh (and swear) when I realized I'd resemble something of a hunched-back pogo stick if I tried to continue running while simultaneously applying pressure to my knee with my already occupied right hand.
Everything settled back into a routine by mile 10 (16 km). First time also for a trip to the medical tent after the race for a wash out and a band-aid. I did manage to improve my time for this race (over last year) but dashed hopes for a fourth consecutive PB.

I stopped running a month ago, having hit an all-time worst time for 5k (27:22, the same as MrsPete's PB).
Hip operation due on Tuesday and I would not expect to run again for six months - and then only if the other hip feels better than it has been doing...
Will let you know it goes.
Can sympathise with the awful half-marathon stories, my last attempt was in 2010 and I managed to become 19 minutes slower than the same race in 2009...

@CreakyPete, just to wish you well for your op on Tuesday. I'm sure you'll do all the exercises they give you, but make sure you do all the resting that is recommended too!
Edit: correcting the tag @CreakyPete

I am not a runner@CreakyPete but I hope your op goes well and you become less Creaky Pete!
I hope all goes well, Pete, and wish you a speedy recovery! Odaijini!
My foot is still a bit sore, but it's much better than it was. I've been skipping the weekly running club runs, and just do low impact workouts (weights and HIIT on the elliptical) instead. I tried running on the treadmill, but gave up because it was hurting my foot. I'll probably go ahead and do the 10K on Sunday, mostly because I have a friend who will probably drop out if I don't run with her. I was really hoping this would be the time I would manage less than an hour, but I'm giving up that hope for the moment and just focusing on finishing uninjured.

All the best for your options, @creakypete. Here's hoping next summer sees you skipping along a few ridges!
Good luck @CreakyPete, hope all goes well with surgery and recovery ! I have empathy for all injured and side lined runners, it's a tough time of year. I continue to run but low milage outdoors due to the change in weather, visiting the gym much more often.
Hi all, thanks for your good wishes. Operation went well with just a spinal block and it was a resurfacing as hoped. Managed 20 hours without food easily so glad of 5:2 experience! In some pain at the moment and sleep is going to be fitful at best but hey ho...
Not been out of bed today, physio starts tomorrow. Might not be in too much of a rush to get the other one done!

@CreakyPete Great that it was a resurfacing, but sorry to hear about the pain. Hope that improves quickly.
20 hours without food? A breeze (almost!) for us 5:2ers, but I wouldn't like to have gone that long before starting this WOE...
Get better soon!

I'm glad it went well. Good luck with physio. I hope the pain subsides quickly. Odaijini!
Glad everything went well. I am convinced that recovery is influenced by your state of mind so I am sure you will be up and running( maybe not literally) very quickly.
I hope you are quickly back on your feet @CreakyPete and have a speedy recovery.
I'm so sorry, I don't seem to be receiving notifications from the forum any more so wasn't aware of your op @CreakyPete.
I'm pleased all went well and 20 hours without food is nothing now;-).
Wishing you a speedy recovery and good luck with the physio. I hope you will be back climbing soon, if not running! xx
