Wow Pete, I knew you were considering an op, but being a bit delinquent on the forum I only saw these posts now.
Pleased it went well and wishing you a speedy and full recovery.
God Bless.

So... Three weeks after the awful half marathon that left my foot in such a state, I decided to go ahead with the 10k I had signed up for. My foot had been feeling a lot better, though not 100%. It was I'll-advised , I'm sure, but I was pretty sure if I didn't run my friend wouldn't either. (She's the mother if a 1 year old and doesn't get many opportunities like this). The good news is my foot health might have gone a bit backwards but not much at all (phew). The bad news is that my time was almost 2 minutes slower than this course last year. It was hot again, though not as humid as the half 3 weeks ago.

Update on hip replacement: I was taking baby steps with a frame after 24 hours, upgrading to elbow crutches later the same day. Hip very swollen (no drain fitted in wound, and no leakage, so I suppose swelling is not unexpected!) but no pain upon standing straight up.
Not allowed to put my full weight on it for the next 6 weeks because my surgeon is playing it safe - there is a 1% chance of fracture of the head of the femur until the bone has remodeled itself. Should be able to manage with one crutch after a fortnight, though.
Was allowed home on Friday (just three nights in hospital) with a supply of aspirin, to help stave off DVT, and painkillers/antiinflammatories. And sexy compression stockings to be worn for 6 weeks...
So far, so good. Flexibility is coming back, sleeping is getting much easier (first night was awful) and the only worry is that of overdoing things and spoiling all the good work.
Interestingly, my first weighing at home shows about 6lbs gain - all fluid in the wounded hip, I hope!

Just come back from a lap of the estate, with my crutches of course, having set a post-op PB of 57 minutes for 2 miles!

@CreakyPeteGlad to see you haven't lost your sense of humour, and good luck with beating your PB on the next tour of the estate
@MaryAnn Congrats on completing your 10k and don't forget you aren't getting any younger and you didn't have the injury problems when you last did the course. I have my 'anniversary' 10k coming up on Sunday - the first ever running race I did a year ago, so the first time I will have had the chance to compare my race time  . I'm terrified I'll do a slower time, especially as I did the race last year with only 2.5 months of 'proper' running. I've been running seriously for a year longer now, I've no injury or health problems (just a little 2kgs extra some of which is muscle) and if I don't do better then my previous time it will be quite demotivating!

Thanks, @Franglaise! Good luck on Sunday :clover: :clover:

Post-op PB for 2 miles now down to 46:30, mainly due to being able to use one crutch most of the way (but carrying two just in case). Over ten minutes faster than Tuesday.
If only that was going to be a linear progression!

Here I am! Silly as this may be, I've been promising myself entry - not just lurking - to this exalted thread as soon as I ran a race.
Well, my time this morning in the local Turkey Trot 5K was 41:56, so here I am, jogging in to tell you about it.
It was my first foot race ever, happening the same month I turned 60. I became a runner at the advanced age of 59.
The weather was perfect. I found a pacing buddy early on. He is 84 years old. He was walking most of the way at just the same pace as I was running, presumably because his legs are about the same length as my entire body  . He is training for the cross country nationals, which he will run with the only 80+ team to compete. And he had open heart surgery earlier this year. There are some amazing people in this world.

Hey @wendyjane - welcome and well done. You must be feeling so proud. Isn't it great meeting older runners who are all about the journey and not stressing about PBs. I was a terrible jogger in my young days, when I tried on and off. Now I'm 50 I might be a bit slow but I know it's just one foot in front of the other and remember to enjoy the view.

Yay @wendyjane! I'm glad you decided to go for it. Sounds like you had a great first race!

Well, I did my 10k race...90 seconds slower than last year, 47m58s  but I ran well and managed a little sprint at the end. I think the extra time might be down to the extra 3kgs I'm carrying compared to this time last year, so I really need to get into gear and lose them, just not sure how as 5:2 might mean I lose muscle rather than fat, so I might do something else.
I'm going to do another 10k in couple of weeks, again one I did last year to see if I can do a little better.
It isn't all bad news, I was 7th out of 116 in my Veteran 2 category, and 28th out of 620 women in total.

That's not a bad result at all Susan, don't forget that at your age an extra year would make you 1% slower anyway (on average) so in relative terms you were only a minute slower! I'm not sure how much muscle is lost with 5:2, if the training is being done then muscle repair signals should keep lean mass unaffected if post-run meals are sufficient (i.e. not necessarily sticking to 500 cals after a long run).
I managed 5k in 67:30 yesterday, a post-operation PB using one crutch - still a long way to go for me!

I managed 5k in 67:30 yesterday
  You should be able to shave minutes off that Personal Worst next week, Pete, as you become more adept with the crutches.
I didn't realise that you lose 1% a year. The other 2% must be due to the weight then
I'm still having terrible bowel problems which doesn't help. When you have cramps in the 7th km and desperately need the loo it doesn't help. I've no idea what/if indeed there is a solution. I tend to spend the rest of the day on the toilet after a race, is it really worth it?
