Glad you had a good weekend Lori. This WOE let's you have a normal life and not feel guilty about indulging once in a while. You just dive straight back in afterwards.

Thanks for the encouragement Dragonbirdy!

When I got to the end of Mondays fast day I wasn't hungry and so decided to do a full 36 hour fast. I felt fine. Tomorrow is my 2nd of 3 fast days this week and I'm going to try to do it again. I'm not going to beat myself up about it if it doesn't pan out just see what happens. And then maybe Friday? I fee lI need a boost to my weight loss to really get as small as I can for getting on that bike in June and I just feel that I should be making the most of all this enthusiasm. We'll see how it goes.

Ok, I' m going to admit it. I've been reading on other boards on this site about longer fasts. MGM has recently completed a4 day water only fast, when I read about it I was amazed and curious. I thought it beyond me. Then I remembered when I was younger (much) that I had done similar fasts and had no ill effects. I did a fair bit of research on the net and decided on Tuesday after what I thought was going to be a 36 hour fast to continue, monitoring myself, taking it easy and drinking plenty. I finished this morning!
I don't know why I couldn't bring myself to post about it. I suppose because the older me thinks it's a bit mad.
I've had no problems. I feel fine today and have had breakfast and tea. I don't want to overload myself. Normal eating this weekend and see what the final outcome is on Monday.

Hope you can all forgive me for not being completely honest?

Well done on doing the longer water fast. Sometimes you need to prove it to yourself before you can tell others (and possibly have to defend your choice).

WOW! 4 days of water only! I'm impressed! I struggled today and ended up eating more than my 500 cals. :frown:

I say we should all feel free to try different things and find out what works for us. I'll be anxious to see the final outcome of your experiment!

Have a good weekend!

Hi Catscratch
I don't have as much weight to lose as you..
I just want to feel healthy and not be one of the people who live on pills in old age..
(I am 73 now)..
I just called in to wish you and the others well on your long haul..

Cat,

I think we all have to play around with this woe to see what works best for us. Not everyone loses the same, eats the same or feels the same. What works for one may not work for someone else.

I didn't this week, but the 2 weeks previous, I did my 2 fast days in a row. Did first fast on Tuesday, wasn't hungry next day until after lunch. By then, I thought why break the fast now, I'll just wait and eat 500 cals at supper, and have both my fasts done for the day. I lost 2 lbs that week. Did the same thing the next week, lost 1 lb and 2 inches. This week, I went back to split fasts, and lost 1 lb.

Hope your experiment has worked out well.

Wow, I'm impressed with the 4 day fast! I saw you post on the 36hr fast thread and thought I'd see how you went! I bet you feel accomplished with that! I'm waiting to see on Monday the results of my two 36hr fasts this week and then decide next week whether to continue or revert to 500 cals or a combination of the two! Maybe at some point I will attempt a longer fast but I'll see how things go. I definitely think experimenting is great for helping me challenge my body and change my thinking and relationship with food, I hope you've learnt lots! Good luck with weigh in :0)

Thanks Katamac, I think you've hit the nail on the head. I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. My body has always behaved itself no matter what I've put it through but as I've gotten older my courage seems to have gone walkabout. No one was more surprised than me when the final day dawned and I had completed it unscathed.

And Lori you have to take each day as it comes. It sounds as if you had a very low cal day anyway so don't beat yourself up about it - thanks for posting I appreciate it:)

And misswendy my overriding goal is to be a good healthy age like you. My mum is 73 and she takes no meds. Hopefully I've inherited some of her healthy genes.

Gait less, I agree that mixing things up is key and life means we have to be flexible which is why this WOE is so fantastic. I didn't intend so soon to push through to a 4 day fast it just felt achievable and I took it one day at a time, paying close attention to what my body was telling me. As I have always done. It was a good experience and I will repeat it in a while.

Mariposa I think it just reaffirmed what fasting has taught me so far and that is that there is so much more to the desire to eat than just hunger. Also this habit that we've all gotten ourselves into where we eat 3 meals a day plus snacks is just ridiculous.

Thanks to all you ladies for posting- I feel much better now!

I agree, maybe when there was a time when the meals weren't as nutritious as what we have available 24/7 now and the daily grind was much more physical it was necessary to eat frequently but it certainly doesn't seem appropriate in this day and age.

Thank you Catscratch creating your journal, I love reading it.

It's my normal weigh-in day today and after a 4 day water fast last week my weightloss is........2lbs.
On the morning of breaking the fast I had shown a 9lb loss but it's evaporated!!
I haven't seriously over indulged this weekend I have had no more than about 2000 cals each day so I'm at a bit of a loss to explain where all that weight has gone back on.
It's a little disappointing I must say!! But.... my digestive system is notoriously slow. I have spent the last few days 'filling back up' and I've fancied carbs more than usual. So I think that once my digestive tract gets it's act in to gear and I get back into my normal eating patterns the weight loss will show up. I think next Monday will be a better indication of what effect the long fast had.

This week I'm planning to stick with 4:3 and make those 3 fasts 36 hour water only.

2lbs is 2lbs and I'm getting smaller all the time and learning an awful lot about my cravings and habits. So far it's all been positive stuff. So onwards and upwards another week of challenges!!

2 lbs is awesome and most likely it was pure fat! You are the incredible shrinking woman, I'm sure! :victory:

I'm promising myself that I will cut down on the carbs this week. My feast days have featured too much chocolate and bread. Time to reign it in so I can post a loss this week.

Have a great week Cat!

You would think that after fasting for 4 days, you would show a greater weight loss. But, I'm sure once you went back to eating, your body tried to keep as much as possible to replace what it lost. Darn if you do, darn if you don't!

I think after going back to your normal plan, your body will release the "extra" it is holding in reserve. You may be very surprised by next weeks weigh in. Besides, 2 lbs lost in one week is GREAT!!! I'm sure all of it was fat weight.

You ladies are lovely!!
I'm sure that the weightloss will show up in it's own sweet time. I did have a bit of a carbfest at the weekend so I think I'm probably holding onto a lot of water, plus as you say gaitless my body is probably trying to grab back some calories. It must have been a hell of a shock to my system.
Funny thing is tho' that I don't feel at all depressed about the lack of weight loss. I'm just really impressed that I could do it and feel such a sense of achievement! And now a 36 hour fast is easy for me. It's like anything is possible now.

Hi catscratch you are doing brilliantly! Don't forget, I think the fat cells hold water for a while after the fat has gone and then release it. How on earth did you manage a four day water fast? Good going but slow and steady wins the race I say......And you are winning!
