My Long Haul Journal
21 Feb 2013, 20:52
I've dieted my whole life, had fantastic success - I can lose weight with the best of them - but here I am approximately 8 stone overweight, again.

I have gotten to the point of booking a consultation for bariatric surgery but recoiled once I did some research and realised the potential long term effects.

I loved doing the 'Eat to Live' diet because like this one it has a lot of science to back it up. But I found that I didn't have the willpower to run two kitchens one Vegan the other Carnivore. But I still bear in mind a lot of what I learned from doing that plan.

This diet attracts me because it feels totally manageable and sustainable and for the first time my husband and son appear to be almost as keen as me.

I started last week fasting fo two days and had a 3lb loss.
I've decided to follow a 4:3 plan as I have a lot of weight to shift.
My husband has booked a motorcycle holiday to Rome in June involving 4 days travelling there on a Harley. I want to be considerably smaller by then so that I'm comfortable on the back of his bike. But I am serious about continuing this for the 'Long Haul' and expect to be following the plan for at least 2 years, until I feel able to continue on 'maintenance'.
I had my blood taken on Tuesday to get a baseline for IGF1, HDL and LDL cholesterol and Insulin. I'll get them rechecked in about 6 months.

So I'm going to need some friends?

It is great that you are here. I have also a lot of weight to lose. I plan to lose nearly 40 kgs and similar to you have planned that this might take me two years.
When I am on a low I picture myself in a top which I had bought ages ago and never worn because I had never manage to shrink into it. And in this top I won't be sitting on a Harley like yourself but running along the beach in summer.
So good luck to both of us!

You might find you get a virtual gastric band...stick with it. Weird feeling knowing you can eat lots but are already full.

I think it's important to have short term and long term goals. The holiday should keep me focused for the next few weeks. My stepson got engaged last week and they are talking about a wedding in a couple of years. Wouldn't it be fab to be a healthy BMI for that?

Today was a feed day. I think I've had around 2000 cals. I feel content and full. I had porridge and berries for breakfast, a small cupcake at a quilt show this morning and a Tuna/mayo salad sub at Subway for lunch, Fajitas for tea and an orange for dessert. No dramas. This way of doing things is so easy I can't quite believe it!

Well done with the weight loss so far, I didn't lose anything this week but I ate like it was going out of fashion on Sunday and I haven't put on any either. This with eating normally on my other non-fast days. Going to be easy to stick eith this.

BBT your post made me smile as I actually went for 'Gastric Band hypnosis' a couple of years ago. That was £400 well spent - not!

Welcome to this friendly place where we are all here for each other. It's really impressive that you are facing your demons and taking charge of them. This time you will make it for sure. I love the idea of the virtual gastric band BBT.

Hi there,

Your story sounds quite similar to mine in that i did the same at the beginning - 2 days 1st week, but have switched to 4:3 for week 2 as i've a load to lose. I'm also going to Rome in June as a short term goal, and my long term goal is a wedding next november - my own!!

Always said if there was anything i would FINALLY get to target for it would be my wedding, so lets see if i can put my money where my greedy mouth is!

On fast day three and all going ok. Weighing tomorrow and DESPERATE for a good result. I love this diet so i really hope it works for me. If it works i can see myself doing this permanently.

Good luck!

Susie your post reminded me of Mimi Spencer's article from The Mail (Ithink) If you haven't already read it it is here:-

It's a quick inspirational read.

I have read it before, but it was good to read it again - thanks!

'Wedding weight is a critical mile-stone in any woman's life'

Too true Mimi!

I cant wait to be 9 stone something for a glorious 24 hour period ;)

Thank you all so much for posting, it's lovely to know that there are people out there who can be bothered to read my mutterings and give some support.

Today is a fast day and has been a bit of a challenge as I've been stuck in the house waiting for things to be delivered. It's made me realise how much of my eating is down to boredom and not real hunger.
The last parcel was delivered at 6.15!

Reading around on this forum I've noticed that some people prefer to leave most of their calories for their evening meal so I thought I would give this a try:- Cup-a-soup for lunch; toast, snap pot of beans, dry-fried egg and 40g of ham for tea.

My son has just gotten in and bless his heart he's stuck with fasting today despite working hard outside in the cold.
His Dad is away at the moment but I speak to him every night and he is sticking with the plan despite staying in a hotel.
I'm so impressed with their enthusiasm. They have both really embraced the diet, it's such a help to not feel I am dragging them along or having to cook different things at mealtimes. This is just such a great way to lose weight for us all!

Hi Catscratch, thought I'd just mention something that struck me when I read your post. I have more weight than you to lose which is why I feel I can say the following.
Doing 4:3 may mean you would lose alot of weight quite quickly (that's the idea I hear you say) but I wonder about the "apron" which you may be left with ?
Slower loss may give you a better chance of avoiding that.
Your choice of course and I hope you don't take offence at what I write.

Thank you for posting and I'm not offended at all. I appreciate what you say. I have lost on numerous occasions, considerable amounts, 8 stone over a two year period - and still had a bit of an apron.I think it's inevitable for me.
Looking at the stats for the forum my group averages about 2lbs a week which is not excessively fast. I'm not intending crash dieting just hoping for consistent loss (like everyone I suppose).
When I've dieted in the past I did plenty of exercise and massaged the skin regularly but I think because of my age and the amount of stretch I have to accept that I'm probably going to have to have some surgery eventually if I want a flat stomach. Probably a tuck rather than that thing where thy slice a piece out of you all the way around.
I'll bear in mind the warnings and keep ane eye on my rate of loss and if I need to drop back to 5:2 the option is always there.

Just thought I'd post before going to sleep. I've had a good food weekend. I think I've finished on approx. 2000 cals both days. It's been good to know that if I want something I can have it, but I haven't felt like pigging out at all. Just had 3 meals each day involving normal amounts of food, no weighing or measuring just educated estimating.
What makes this so easy is not feeling deprived at all.

Weigh-in in the morning! I've just entered my stats into a posh new set of scales all ready for when I wake up. Fingers crossed!
