Re: Couch to 5k
24 Mar 2014, 23:29
Just done week 6 day 1 this morning on the treadmill and found it surprisingly tough. I did a 20 minute non-stop jog on Friday and so thought today's pattern of 5-8-5 would be a piece of cake. WRONG. I'm now quite concerned that I will struggle with day 3 when I have to jog for 23 minutes

I say jog rather than run because I really can't manage more than 6.4 kmph for the walking and 7.4 kmph for the running. Plus I'm on a 1% incline because I'm doing it indoors.

However, I do feel a real sense of achievement because I'm 61, haven't run for at least 45 years, and am still 40lbs above my target weight. :victory:

I think you are doing great! I think your speed is fine for someone just starting. And who knows maybe your body was just more tired than usual today. I wouldn't worry about Day 3 until it gets here. Also, you can always repeat a day until you feel strong enough to move to the next day!

I'm starting Week 3 tomorrow!

Hey thanks cblasz and good luck with your own C25K journey!

Hi @RachaelB don't know if you know but there is a C25k website on
Health Unlocked (NHS website). I haven't been on it for a while but often there were posts about week6 run 1 being tougher than expected. Think it is mainly because you are going back to intervals after the first long run - bit of a shock.

Also it could be just one of those runs when your mind/body just doesn't seem to 'get it' which we all have, often for no apparent reason.

You are doing well. Just keep on keeping on.

Same here @RachelB! I did miss all runs last week as I was ill and I found yesterday (week6 run1) tough. In fact, for the first time I have aching muscles and think I might have pulled something a little in the back of my right leg. I was wondering about going back and repeating week 5. But, I think every run is tough and it is supposed to push me a little byond the comfort zone so that I can improve each week. Each run I think "well, I will start it and see what happens" not fully believing I will actually get through it! That said, yesterday I did actually miss the last minute of the run and had to walk it. That was the first time I didnt fully complete it. Was it really tough? Was it my sore muscle? Or was it my recent illness and week off? Im not sure, but I expect tomorrow will be equally tough! I might treat myself to a physio session. Meanwhile, I will keep plodfing through the programme!

Thanks AnnieW. I started off with the NHS C25K app and then moved onto the Zen Labs one as I prefer the display. I hadn't read the posts about week 6 so thanks for telling me. I feel greatly reassured.

Hello ladies. Nice to see a new gang embarking on this challenge. I'm stuck on week 4 at present as can't get to my treadmill. :frown:

I just finished Week 3 Day 1. I had a tough time with the 2nd 3 minute interval and stopped about 30 seconds early. But, that's ok, by the end of the week I should be able to do it no problem!

Caroline - is there no where you can go outside?

It's ok I will get there, it's just that it's not so easy to run around here. Busy main road, dark country tracks, the river. Not ideal. Bŷ the time it lightens up in the eves I will be able to use treadmill again. You're all doing very well btw.@cblasz thanks, I get 4 exercise classes in still so all ok.

Phew-eeeee *red faced, puffing and steam coming out of my ears*. Well, I started week 7 and completed the full 25 mins. Cant believe it. I was literally on the couch 8 weeks ago eating chocolate. I really have an enormous sense of achievement. its up there with giving birth to 11lbs5oz without pain relief   the niggling pain in the back of my leg is still at me though- hamstring I am guessing. Any tips for this?

Deep massage or sitting on a foam roll moving along the back of the leg from bottom to knee. A rolling pin or tennis ball will work too. Gently in the key here, controlling body weight with enough pressure to be a 6-7 on a 0-10 pain scale. Slooowly. Do this for a minute or two focusing on the painful spots. Give it a few minutes rest then do it again. Don't forget to breathe. It'll definitely feel better afterward.

Great job! @scubachick I hope the pain goes away.

I missed a training session this weekend, due to lousy weather and having a lot of plans for my birthday. But, I'm going to get back on track tomorrow. I will be doing Week 3 Day 3.

I have a vacation from work in a few weeks, so I'm hoping I'll catch up then, in time for my 5K on 4/26!

@Scubachick Well done. That's a tremendous result. Still waiting to repeat week 6 as last week was just an epic fail :frown:
