You've got to try the magnesium Phil@philxjr ..last night was the one night i forgot to take it, and i didnt sleep...it seems to make me sleep more deeply tho not for a full night, but deffo a better night. It must be awful trying to get thru yr working day without enough zeds. It's a chemical element,so surely it won't show up as a drug..i dont think so anyway :?:

You are right candice (or is it Candy) lol, I must remember to get some and try them. (I assume you can get them at Boots?) I must be getting old . I started taking glucosamine and cod live oil for my painful knee and now I need something to help me sleep.
Incidentally that is a vicious circle. The Dr said my knee is bad because of my weight yet to lose weight faster I need to exercise which is difficult because of my knee !

I got some magnesium when in the Uk recently @candicemarie. I'm a bit worried about taking them as the man in the shop said they are a muscle relaxer and that's how they help you sleep. The reason I'm worried is because sometimes I'm in bed and notice that my heart rate is very slow (between 50 and 60bpm). I know it sound a bit daft but my heart is a muscle, will it relax even more? and beat even slower. Maybe @carorees will be able to put my mind at rest. Hope you get a better nights sleep tonight Phil

Hi @justdee a resting heart rate of 50-60 is not "very low" mine is regularly below 50 and I'm fine! A normal heart rate is 60-70 so a bit under is fine. I have always had a heart rate on the low side and the magnesium has made no difference.

Make sure you get the best absorbed magnesium compound or it will just have a laxative effect and not benefit your sleep. Magnesium citrate or chelated magnesium is what you want. Magnesium oxide (the cheapest) or hydroxide is poorly absorbed but is good for having a 'clear out' IYKWIM! Also remember that if the bottle says "magnesium citrate, 500mg" that does not mean you are getting 500mg of magnesium but of the compound, 500mg of magnesium citrate only gives you about 80mg of actual magnesium. You need to check how much magnesium itself is in the tablets and aim to take about 300-400mg per day.

good luck with it.

Thanks for that @carorees, it's put my mind at rest. I'll give them a go tonight. I have the magnesium citrate it says 125mg elemental with vitamin B for increased absorption, it says take 1 or 2. And they were not cheap. I'll take 1 tonight and increase if it has no effect. Thanks

That's a conundrum isnt it @philxjr re yr knee.. Maybe try exercise bike as thats not weightbearing and perhaps be a little easily more doable than walking/ running etc?
Call me Candy/ Candice/ anything..just don't call me late for dinner
I bought my magnesium at Holland and B..sometimes they have a penny sale,so i was able to buy one full price and get another for a penny! They also sometimes have half price sales etc..maybe read the info on this thread from Caro re magnesium
Thank you @carorees for info regarding question from @just dee
Makes sense its a muscle relaxant..i didnt know that but have noticed how relaxed i feel before falling to sleep..good to know our hearts will be ok tho! :like:

So the last 2 nights I've taken Magnesium citrate an hour or so before bed. I can't say it makes me feel sleepy or tired but once in bed I have been falling asleep with no problems and seem to be sleeping much deeper. Much thanks @candicemarie and @caroreesfor your advice.

So pleased to hear that @justdee X we need our zeds! :like:
I take mine a good two hours before bed. They are big fellas aren't they! At first i found it hard to swallow them..a couple of times i crushed them and took them in water, not v pleasant!but i've got used to swallowing them now. Worth it anyhoo for deeper sleep..i don't sleep any longer, could still do with a few more hours, but a more restful deeper sleep.

They're massive candy, I had to cut them in half. I'm sure I'll get used to them. Do you take them every night @candicemarie? I only have 60 and don't know where I'd get anymore here in spain. Don't think I'll take any tonight as can have a bit longer in bed tomorrow.

Hi @philxjr, if you can go to your local gym and book a proper session with a qualified trainer. They will work with you, working around your weaknesses to eventually strengthen those weaknesses.

If you have been following my story you will know that I had major surgery 3 months back, replacing a disk in my neck with bone from my hip. The instructor I had been using previously refused to even allow me into the gym for 8 weeks, then when I had the go ahead from my doc about gym work he put me on specific exercises for just my lower body to help the hip recover, and stop my pelvis seizing up. But he won't even allow me to lift 1kg weights yet until I get the neck all clear from my surgeon.

At my weight, 240lbs my instructor won't allow ANY jogging, even when I'm given the all clear. Its too damaging to the joints especially the knees, one of which I have torn the cartlidge and had repaired. So a lot of my cardio work is done on a stationary bike and walking on the treadmill. When I can go back to it, I will be using the cross trainer again, but again, under supervision.
